Happy Anniversary

Today is the 27th anniversary of the "Miracle on Ice."  As Americans, we should all be thankful to the little team that could.  I was nine years old when the game was played on February 22, 1980, and up until the game was over, and the reaction it generated, all I seem to remember is the constant image of our hostages in Iran and the lack of confidence the country I lived in had (thanks Jimmy Carter!).  But the reaction of the country to us defeating the Soviet Union in that hockey game was incredible.  It was my first exposure to "patriotism."  And it was amazing!  Just how important to our country that Herb Brooks and those 20 young hockey players were/are was realized again when the hockey players came together to light the Olympic flame in Salt Lake City in 2002.  Just five months after 9-11, there they were again, showing us all just how great of a country we live in and how dreams can come true.  While Herb Brooks left us too soon after a car accident several years ago, what he helped bring to this country will never be foregotten.  And never should be.  If you own a copy of the movie Miracle, today is the day to watch it.  This still is the greatest country in the world.  Anybody who doubts that, should look at the streams of people trying to get into our country, even if they have to do it illegally (which is a whole other topic).  President Ronald Reagan took what that team did, and expanded upon it.  It seems fitting to me then, that both the Miracle on Ice, and President Regan's birthday (Feb. 6) are in the same month.  And both are still held in such high esteem by the american public as they should be.  Happy Anniversary to the little team that could, and did!  And we miss you Herb Brooks and President Reagan.
